Sprained Ankle

If you have sprained your ankle it is important to get proper care as soon as possible, preventing permanent damage. The injured ankle should be iced immediately and elevated. It should be further treated with compression to reduce the pain and swelling.

A good ankle brace can provide compression and reduce ankle movement to avoid further injury. You'll find there are several different types of ankle supports that are available including mild, moderate and maximum ankle bracing. The type of ankle support you need depends on how serious your ankle injury is. Also, whether this is the first sprain or a repeat injury.

Help for Foot Drop

The condition know as Foot Drop is a seemingly simple syndrome that may have complex causes and possibly serious consequences. Weakness or injury in the muscles of the foot, ankles, and toes cause the foot to droop. The result is that it can drag on the ground or catch on steps, causing falls and possible injuries.

Even if the sufferer can avoid accidents, the condition can cause a slow, uneven gait because of the need to overcompensate. The resulting lack of body symmetry will cause discomfort and even pain in the legs and back. The condition can be a genetic characteristic or the result of post-polio syndrome. A stroke, multiple sclerosis or other neuromuscular diseases can result in the foot dropping or even diabetes.

For some people, a series of exercises may correct the symptoms of the drop foot syndrome; in others, supportive foot drop braces or stockings can help. Some traditional supports are stiff, causing discomfort and possible clumsiness in walking. However, newer, more flexible supports made of modern materials help the wearer lift the foot during the swing phase of a stride, creating a smoother walking gait.

The Way to Keep Running

With all the stress and pain that runners go through, when it comes to taking care of their knees, there is something they can do to help protect their knees.

If you want to keep running for a long time to come, wearing a knee brace that lends itself well to running is one of the best and least expensive routes to take. It pays off when it comes to protecting this vital part of the body that runners depend on. Meniscus tears and other injuries are very common to runners. The long term effect of running mile after mile every week eventually takes it toll on the body and usually the knees are one of the first places runners feel it. A good knee brace is 'golden'.

Rebounding for Health

Using a rebounder is a surprisingly effective way to improve your health and overall well-being. The benefits are many and include improvements in muscle mass, endurance, the digestive system, bone density, the lymphatic system, the nervous system, metabolism, circulatory system, balance, cholesterol, and even vision. It is all about how a rebounder allows you to use gravity to your advantage.

Intuitively, one thinks that using a mini trampoline (a rebounder) is comparable to aerobic activities such as jogging or cycling. Rebounding is a great form of aerobic exercise and doesn't have the bone-jarring impacts associated with running and jogging. However, unlike other activities, the g-force from rebounding exercises every single cell in your body. When you reach the bottom of your bounce, you are subjected to about 1.5g (50% increase in the force of gravity). At the top of your bounce you are weightless. This forces your body at the cellular level to strengthen itself because of the constant cycle of increased/decreased stress placed uniformly across your body.

Treadmills are Perfect for Winter

Human beings need a certain amount of exercise every day to stay in the best of health. The benefits are many and consistent and regular exercise will pay huge dividends, especially in later life. The benefits include a healthy heart and lungs, lower cholesterol blood pressure levels, help with maintaining proper levels of insulin.

Basic walking is a great way to get the heart pumping and pushing blood through the arteries. Unfortunately, where I live, for a lot of the winter months, the sidewalks are covered with ice. As for our busy lives, we don't always factor in time to go for a walk. For me and many others, a treadmill is the best solution.

Also, with a treadmill, you can listen to music, read a book or magazine, or watch television which makes time go by. Before you know it, you have walked the necessary time to make a difference.

Strength Training best for Baby Boomers

In the past, Baby Boomers have relied on cardio type activity to keep fit. But it has recently been found that these types of recreational activities (walking, jogging or cycling) do not have the youth enhancing and body transforming effects of strength training exercise.

It is no wonder that they are now showing a strong interest in strength training it directly counters the most visible negative age related problems such as muscle tissue loss, muscle weakness, bone thinning, joint disease, decreased coordination, hunched over posture, increased risk of disease and loss of energy and vitality. Strength training makes age related weakness and frailty a thing of the past.

Ankle Sprains and Injuries

For anyone who enjoys an active lifestyle, ankle pain can be a nuisance. The structures in the ankle that can be damaged are the tendons, cartilage and blood vessels. Some of the common causes of pain are ankle sprain, arthritis, tendonitis, psoudogout and infection.

With an ankle sprain, the injury is to the ligaments of the ankle causing them to partially or completely tear as a result of sudden stretching. These sprains can occur on either or both of the inner and outer portions of the ankle joints. Muscle weakness in the ankle area is normally why ankle sprains occur. The pain associated with the sprain is initially severe and can be connected with a "popping" sensation. Swelling over the area often occurs as the injured blood vessels leak fluid into the local tissue. A good ankle brace often helps.
